Writer's Block...

Bitch about it, complain about it, try to force it and when all else has failed, I relax, go about living my life, resigned I'll never write again, only to find inspiration in the oddest of places..

Fiction! Excellent. All my published stuff so far is nonfiction, but I just signed a contract to do some children's books (now writing FURIOUSLY to meet the insane deadlines they gave me!).

Just got a rejection letter yesterday on an adult novel I had submitted to a NYC house. They said, "We think your writing is clean and polished, however the characters and situations within your story were familiar and well-used in the genre."

And you know what? They're right. I submitted the book three, four months ago, and soon afterwards, I got some great ideas for restructuring and reshaping it. When I get time, I want to overhaul it, rework the characterisation, retitle it, and send it out again.

The way I see it, rejection is feedback--especially when it's a personal letter (like this one) and not a form letter. And when the feedback resonates with your own misgivings about your work, it gives you something to work with.

I visited your site, and it's a lot of fun. "Gal in Pants" is hilarious stuff--good show! I used to do cartooning, but haven't in years--mine was more in the vein of the old EC Comics sci-fi/adventure stuff. I miss it, but there's just no time for pen and ink anymore--too busy at the keyboard, scrambling to meet deadlines. :0(

Trade? Sure! I'd love to see your work. Keep me in mind when your book comes out!
